Cradle to Cradle: William McDonough Speaking Engagement

Bill McDonough, author of Cradle to Cradle, spoke to a packed house in the Great Hall of the Nantucket Atheneum on August 22, 2008 at a free event co-sponsored by ReMain Nantucket, the Nantucket Atheneum, Sustainable Nantucket, Mitchell’s Book Corner and Nantucket Bookworks. People were well prepared for Bill’s appearance on the Island  since in anticipation of his talk, ReMain Nantucket  offered anyone who purchased a book at Mitchell’s or Bookworks in July and  August a free copy of Cradle to Cradle.  Bill’s message of refocusing the way we think and act toward a sustainable future is central to the mission of ReMain Nantucket.

Mitchell’s Book Corner

In January 2008 ReMain Nantucket purchased the property at 54 Main Street in Nantucket from Mimi Beman.  This building has been home to  Mitchell’s Book Corner since 1968 and ReMain’s mission is  to try to ensure the continuity of a Main Street business that has been an island fixture.  ReMain Nantucket has leased the first floor bookstore to local entrepreneurs Mary Jennings and Lucretia Voigt to operate the bookstore business. Jennings and Voigt have the knowledge and understanding to make Mitchell’s a continued success.

ReMain Nantucket plans to make necessary renovations to the building housing Mitchell’s Book Corner to improve its energy profile.  The organization hopes to make the building a model for green renovations within an historic district.
