The Human Element Presentations

In June and November of 2019, ReMain Nantucket hosted two free screenings of the documentary The Human Element produced by award-winning environmental photographer, James Balog. To observe the human impact on planet earth, Balog launched the Extreme Ice Survey, founded the Earth Vision Institute, and embarked on his film projects. The documentary details the indelible imprint of humans on nature and how our activities are altering the basic life elements—earth, air, water, fire, and in turn, affecting our health, safety, and livelihood.

James Balog was the featured speaker at the June presentation of the film and guest speaker for the Nantucket Preservation Trust Symposium, Keeping History Above Water, where he shared his first-hand experiences of climate change. The November presentation was followed by a local panel discussion that included the Maria Mitchell Association, Nantucket Land Council, Conservation Foundation of Nantucket, and the Town’s Department of Public Works. They collectively shared their work in areas of sustainability and coastal resilience for the community.
